Foundations of Advanced Grammar
A masterclass to learn how to master complex grammar and overcome the plateau
Who is this masterclass for?
This session was designed for those who:
- would like to understand what complexity is;
- feel they know all grammar rules but struggle to put words together in writing;
- have worked with coursebooks from cover to cover and yet are unable to write well;
- are able to tell a text is advanced/proficient but have no idea why.
- would like to brush up on advanced grammar and syntax;
- would like to feel more confident when teaching grammar (this applies only to teachers);
- have no idea how to teach grammar without using grammatical terms;
- would like to overcome the B2/C1 plateau.
The main aim of this session is to teach language lovers (whether they are English teachers or students) how to look at grammar from a broader perspective so that they can, little by little, "zoom in" and start to understand complex structures.
More importantly, this course will help you become more language aware.
The rationale behind this course
Over the years, I've worked with advanced students who, despite having worked with coursebooks from cover to cover and consistently got the correct answers in gap-fill exercises, are simply unable to write at the advanced or proficient levels. Many know the names of many grammar points but are unable to explain (or even understand) what they mean. As a consequence, they demonstrate extreme difficulty in understanding what advanced grammar really is as well as what grammatical complexity in writing is. This becomes particularly challenging when students decide to prepare for Cambridge exams, when they are expected to write using grammar with sophistication in a way that is fully controlled and completely natural.
It is my contention that the reason why many learners struggle to write well is a direct result of a lack of a solid foundation when it comes to grammar. By foundation I mean they seem to ignore how and why words combine. With that in mind, I've selected the topics below to be covered in the session.
Content of the session
- Types of phrases: noun phrases, prepositional phrases, verb phrases, adjective phrases, adverb phrases, gerund phrases, infinitive phrases, participle phrases.
- Types of clauses: dependent, independent, finite, non-finite.
- Types of sentences: simple, compound, complex, compound-complex.
- How to create complexity in writing at different levels.
The concepts above will be explored through pieces of authentic material.
