Mastering Reading and Use of English Exercises for Cambridge Exams
A course to holistically unravel the Reading and Use of English Paper, learn how to read between the lines & how to design your own exercises while working on language development.
*Available to be taken asynchronously only*
Who is this course for?
This course is for those who are either preparing students or self-preparing to pass the Cambridge C2 Proficiency and the Cambridge C1 Advanced exams. This is also a course for those who have already passed their Cambridge exams but consider themselves language lovers and who would like to unravel the paper and gain perspective into language. This course is currently sold out to be taken synchronously; however, you can still buy it to work asynchronously. The recordings and homework are always sent immediately after each lesson.
The rationale behind this course
Over the years, students have often told me about their difficulty in exploring their mistakes with a view to not making them again in the future. When students make mistakes, they check the answer key and generally move on, which, in my view, is what prevents them from learning the language in more depth. For this reason, I argue that more development can be achieved through post-practice than practice itself: students should devote time to understanding why the correct answer is correct and why the wrong answer is wrong. What's more, why certain things tend to be tested in the same exercise. When the focus is on post-practice, students become more aware of the language besides becoming able to connect all parts of the exam when exploring exercises. In this way, their preparation becomes richer and more meaningful.
How will this course work?
This is a group course, being the minimum number of students 4 and the maximum 8.
This course will focus mainly on Reading and Use of English paper with a view to helping students turn weaknesses into strengths; the work on strategies and language development in this course can easily be transferred and applied to the development of other skills required to pass the exam.
Different from most courses focused on exams, in this couse, students will be assigned exam tasks to work on prior to class (the tasks will be sent 1 week before the lesson; ideally, students should work on it before the class, although they can still follow the lesson in case they happen not to have time to work in advance). Whether they've got the wrong or right answers, the goal of the lesson is to deconstruct the entire exercise in order to identify distractors and evidence of the answer. In this process, it will be possible to:
-
actively work on students' weaknesses;
- dive deep into language analysis ("digest" reading passages");
-
learn how reading passages can become input for language development;
-
use mistakes in Use of English exercises as input to work on designing your own exercises;
-
connect language from reading passages and Use of English exercises to the writing paper.
-
use emergent language.

This course is the result of successful workshops delivered earlier this year, which focused on both reading and use of English exercises. Here are some nice comments left by people, from all parts of the word, who took part in them:
"This is by far the most in-depth one-day training session I've ever attended. Fernanda's session really goes deep into the ins and outs of Use of English exercises and teaches some truly innovative ways to understand and teach them without relying on textbooks. Thank you for such a complete session. I can't wait to sign up for the next one!" - Ms. Morgan from England
"I liked the post activities you recommended to develop other abilities such as Word formation and writing tasks. It was incredible how you showed us to visualize and understand context." - Ms. Rocha from Brazil
"There have been a few things I have liked quite a lot. First of all, bringing to my attention what to look at in each task. As I am a teacher, I have struggled with finding the simplest explanation for my students. Listening to your explanation has helped me put into perspective what I have been missing. Secondly, as you have advertised, you have helped us come up with our own activities. I truly believe this will help me immensely. Finally, this might not be of great importance, still I really want to place emphasis on feeling great after the session. I have been suffering from the imposter syndrome; however, your session has helped a lot in that department as I feel much more confident." Ms. Govedarica from Serbia
"It's hard to pinpoint one thing as I enjoyed the workshop in every possible way. But if i were to choose one thing it'd be how you delieved it, namely, the way you explain grammar in a transparent way, and by extention how we may use it later on while practicing on our own." - Ms. Papiewska from Poland
"Your organization and clarity really stood out to me. It was evident that you thought about every single detail and planned both the materials and the session carefully. I also liked getting to know more about how you work and your approach to texts and Cambridge exams. The session as an overall was very useful to me and I have already started putting some of your suggestions into practice." Ms. Passos from Brazil
"I would say everything was intentionally prepared. What struck me the most was the way exercises were exploited for each part of the UOE and how these were intertwined. Never before have I explored the Use of English paper the way Fernanda has done. She seems to be incurably infected with the UOE bug. As she asserts, she sees UOE exercises everywhere. Admittedly, in our attempt to master a language, we tend to focus on meaning only, sometimes neglecting form. Probably because we have been taught that Grammar is simply not important. However, when one faces this kind of exams, one should be fully aware of the importance of language systems. Fernanda has an effective way to help you sail through this paper. She's definitely your go to person if you are pursuing Cambridge exam training either as a teacher or learner."- Ms. Oroya from Peru

What happens after I pay?
It is suggested that you should try to work on a Reading and Use of English mock test on your own. In the process, notice your approach to each task and try to sense your struggles. Along with a mindset of learning, self-awareness is an important skill to be developed. A student who is self-aware is better able to maximize their strengths and overcome their weaknesses. Having finished your mock test, get ready for your first lesson on August 3rd, after which the Reading and Use of English paper will never be the same. See you then!
