The L.A. Writing Club

A language analysis writing club focused on exploring the differences between different writing genres and actively practicing writing.

This course is currently sold out.

Who is this course for?
This course is for English teachers and students of the English language who want to explore the differences between different writing genres (namely essay, letters, reviews, articles, and reports) and actively practice writing.

The rationale behind this course
Teaching writing lessons to students preparing to pass advanced Cambridge exams, I've noticed that some students tend to focus solely on grammar and vocabulary when they work on their writing skills, neglecting other important aspects, such as organization and communicative achievement. Students who failed the exam in the past and later came to me for private tutoring reported "not knowing what went wrong, as they remembered employing a lot of advanced structures and vocabulary in their writing tasks." There is more to advanced writing than simply language. In this course, the goal is to work on language analysis for different genres by actively producing texts in class.

What makes this course a must?
This course will help learners familiarize themselves with different writing genres as well as the conventions of each genre. What's more, this course will work on aspects related to appropriacy and register, something that is often overlooked in textbooks.

Course format
This is a group course that includes a 1:1 tutorial with me at the end.
Minimum number os students: 3
Maximum number of students: 4
The duration of each session is 1 hour and 10 minutes. If the student is not able to attend the session, they will have access to the recording, which will be made available for 30 days.
What does a typical lesson look like?
The lessons will always focus on two genres at the same time with a view to contrasting them, making the differences between them visible. For example, the focus of a lesson could be on the differences between the introduction of an essay and the introduction of an article. In the first part of the lesson, students will be presented with problematic passages and their goal is to find problems in the two passages and fix them. The second part of the lesson will consist of writing a paragraph (as a continuation of the paragraph that was fixed) following the conventions of the genre being studied in that specific class. Feedback will be immediate, in class.
