MASTERING THE GAPPED TEXT:
Coherence, cohesion, and comprehension in Cambridge exams
This is a session designed to move exam tutors and exam takers beyond surface strategies and towards a deeper understanding of how meaning is constructed across a text, enabling them to make principled, exam-relevant choices in the gapped text task.
The session equips participants with a clear analytical framework, showing how coherence shapes the logic of a text, how cohesion encodes those relationships linguistically, and how comprehension emerges from the interaction between the two in the gapped text task.
By the end of the session, participants will have shifted their focus from “finding the right option” to understanding how ideas, language, and meaning work together to hold a text together.
