THE DOGME BOOK CLUB
Where teaching meets curiosity, conversation, and a touch of rebellion.
You’ve heard about Dogme. You know it’s materials-light, conversation-driven, and rooted in emergent language. That’s the theory. But what does it look like in practice? How does it unfold in a real classroom, with real learners and all the unpredictability that comes with them?
That’s the question Dogme in Practice sets out to answer. In this unique collection, over 30 teachers from around the world—including myself—share classroom stories and concrete examples of Dogme in action. Each chapter includes a commentary from Scott Thornbury and Luke Meddings, adding depth and a nod to the approach’s roots. If you’ve been wondering what Dogme looks like in real life—this is the book that shows you.
Aiming to help more teachers understand and apply Dogme in their own practice, Lívia Borba, a fellow English teacher (introduced below), and I have decided to co-host a book club to read and discuss Dogme in Practice. And now, we’re thrilled to announce that registrations are open!
Below, you’ll find all the details.

Fernanda Cwiertnia
Having walked the teaching path for over 12 years, I’m a non-native English teacher based in Brazil, holding the Cambridge CELTA and C2 Proficiency. I’ve taught learners from A1 to C1, but since 2020, my work has focused on language awareness and development—especially in writing—for students aiming to reach C1 and C2 levels. After completing training in Dogme ELT and benefiting from a 1:1 tutorial with Scott Thornbury, I most recently contributed a chapter to Dogme in Practice.

Lívia Borba
With over 15 years of experience, a CELTA, and a C2 Proficiency certification, I specialize in helping upper-intermediate and advanced learners refine their language through student-centered, lexical-focused teaching. I live Dogme ELT daily—reactive, material-light, and driven by real communication. I’ve delivered three successful workshops on Dogme and one on emergent language, attended by over 50 teachers. I'm passionate about helping learners and teachers notice language, embrace spontaneity, and develop through authentic, meaningful interaction.
