READING BY DESIGN
Every page deserves a conversation.
A guided reading experience for English teachers who want to read professional literature more thoughtfully.
Professional books are full of insights. Yet, many of us read a chapter, highlight a few sentences, close the book... and struggle to turn those ideas into lasting professional growth.
Reading by Design was created to change that.
Rather than reading quickly, we read deliberately. We slow down, question assumptions, connect ideas, and explore how they shape our understanding of language—and, ultimately, the way we teach it.
Read by design. Teach by design.
We meet once a month. Reading by Design isn't built around finishing chapters; it's built around engaging with them. Each meeting is followed by time to reflect, revisit the text, connect ideas to our own teaching, and notice how they influence our thinking in the weeks that follow. Professional growth shouldn't be rushed, and neither should professional reading.
Our first book

We begin with About Language, a book that invites us to think more deeply about the language we teach. Rather than offering ready-made techniques, it encourages us to question assumptions, develop our language awareness, and explore English beyond rules and definitions.
It is the ideal starting point for a community built around reflective reading and professional discussion. Together, we'll unpack ideas, connect them to our own classrooms, challenge perspectives, and translate theory into meaningful teaching decisions. Our goal isn't simply to finish a professional book, but to develop the habit of reading critically, thinking deeply, and allowing what we read to shape both our understanding of language and our teaching.
Please note: Participants are responsible for obtaining their own copy of About Language before we begin. The book is not included in the membership, and I will not be providing printed or digital copies. Since we'll be referring to it throughout our discussions, I recommend having your own copy available from the start.
